For optimal health and viability of your new sod, we highly recommend the pre-application of BioGrass Suståne® (4-6-4) fertilizer in Salt Lake City. This product can also be applied on top of new sod. For an existing turf lawn, we recommend Suståne 18-1-8+Fe. These products have been specifically blended for use in our northern Utah area.

Promote lawn health Why should I use fertilizer?
The Intermountain West – and particularly the local areas of northern Utah – is infamous for having challenging soils. Rarely will you find native soils that are adequate for cultivating or sustaining healthy turf grass. Soil amendments can help. However, fertilization is critical for developing healthy root systems, allowing nutrients and moisture to flow freely to the turf. Fertilizers also provide turf with the ability to resist disease and remain vibrant, helping to choke out weeds.
Used in the spring and fall, the right grass fertilizer will help ensure that your lawn retains a vibrant green color throughout the growing season.
Protecting your investmentDo I really need to fertilize after my sod is established?
After your sod has firmly rooted and you have dialed back watering, it’s time to start implementing a fertilizer program.
Utah is known for its variable temps and sub-par soils. If you want to build deep roots, maintain an attractive green color, and keep your lawn strong and aggressive all season long, consistent fertilizations are essential.
Starting in late February to mid-March, apply a high nitrogen fertilizer with Iron (18-1-8+Fe) to help your lawn come out of dormancy. Repeat every 4-6 weeks or as needed to keep the grass strong and healthy.
Remember: If you plan to seed, don’t apply a fertilizer that contains a preemergent!
