Lawn Fertilizer Guide – How to Feed Your Utah Sod

You’ve invested in the best sod on the market and have successfully installed your new sod. Now maintain it with products that will keep your grass looking as good as it did when you first planted it. Follow the instructions below to ensure best results for your new lawn.

Fertilizer Application Instructions

  1. Check Conditions: Apply lawn fertilizer when temperatures are fairly cool and your lawn is dry.
  2. Use a Broadcast Spreader: For best results, apply fertilizer with a broadcast spreader rather than a drop spreader.
    • Please read your spreader manual carefully so you do not burn your lawn.
    • Typically the setting should be at 5 or 6.
    • This is for a medium or average application. Use a higher setting if needed.
  3. Apply Fertilizer: Spread the fertilizer on the bare dirt if possible. If not, spread it on the grass.
  4. Water Immediately: Water all fertilized areas immediately following fertilization.
  5. Normal Watering: After initial application, follow a normal watering schedule.

Application Tips & Reminders

  • Apply Sustane fertilizer to your lawn and garden three times per year.
  • Use the holidays as a memory guide (i.e. Easter, 4th of July and Halloween for a winterizer).
  • All-natural Suståne 4-6-4 fertilizer performs best underneath the sod.

Choosing a Lawn Fertilizer

For Existing Lawns: BioGrass 18-1-8+Fe Fertilizer

  • This is a balanced, naturally based fertilizer that works any time of year. 
  • All season fertilizer works best on established lawns.
  • We recommend an all season fertilizer over 4 step fertilizer or other multi-step fertilizers.
  • IMPORTANT NOTE: Because this fertilizer contains 1% iron, you must sweep it off all concrete and stone surfaces near fertilized ground before watering. Otherwise, permanent rust stains will appear.

For New Lawns: Suståne® (4-6-4) Fertilizer

  • For optimal health and viability of your new sod, we highly recommend the pre-application of BioGrass Suståne® (4-6-4) fertilizer in Salt Lake City. 
  • This product can also be applied on top of new sod, although underneath is better. For an existing turf
  • This and other fertilizer products have been specifically blended for use in our northern Utah area.
